About Us

We strive “to know God through Jesus Christ and make him known through our lives and actions.”

Christus Rex, the risen Christ, stained glass window at the east end of the church was installed in 1999. It was created by the J. Wippel Company of Exeter, England.

Our Mission

We strive “to know God through Jesus Christ and make him known through our lives and actions.” We believe that the door to salvation is always open and so are the doors to our church. Our mission is to be fully devoted to Jesus by opening our arms to those in search of the truth. Whether you are searching for a community of faith, curious about Christianity and the Episcopal Church, or just passing through, St. Michael’s parish welcomes you.

The Vestry

The vestry is the committee responsible for temporal affairs of the parish (e.g., church budget, building maintenance, and long-range planning). Members are elected to three-year terms at the annual parish meeting in January. Minutes of monthly vestry meetings are posted on the Resources bulletin board located near the water fountain and the Rector’s office.

What we believe at St. Michael’s

The beliefs of the Episcopal Church are outlined in the Catechism (or a summary of principles), which is found in The Book of Common Prayer (BCP). The entire book and Catechism can be viewed online here.

St. Michael’s Church is a local expression in Cookeville, Tennessee, of the Christian faith universal with roots dating back to biblical history and the ancient church.

We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the revealed Word of God containing all things necessary to salvation

We worship one God in three Persons, praying to the Father through the Son by the Holy Spirit

We take part in the Sacraments ordained by Christ himself, through the ministry of the apostolic orders

We are an integral part of the one Body of Christ composed of Churches which, united under the headship of Jesus, are in the fellowship of the one holy catholic and apostolic Church throughout the ages

We hold the one Faith revealed in Holy Scripture, and defined in the creeds as maintained by the undivided primitive Church in the undisputed Ecumenical Councils

We belong to the worldwide Anglican Communion under the leadership of the Archbishop of Canterbury. With over 85 million members, it is the third largest Christian denomination.

Christus Rex, the risen Christ, stained glass window at the east end of the church was installed in 1999. It was created by the J. Wippel Company of Exeter, England.

We worship God because of who God is and what God has done for us. As Revelations 4:11 says, “O Lord our God, you are worthy to receive glory and honor and power; because you have created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”

The Rev.
Dr. TJ (Antoinette) Azar

Mother TJ comes to us most recently after nearly 10 years as rector of Calvary Episcopal Church in Ashland, Kentucky. Before that, she spent most of her life in Southeast Ohio, where she received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English Language and Literature and worked in two colleges as a writing professor and a specialist in the assessment of student academic achievement.

As a priest, Mother TJ developed a passion for evangelism and made this the subject of her doctoral thesis. She also provided evangelism leadership training in the Diocese of Lexington.

Mother TJ says, “The leadership and staff at St. Michael’s have been remarkably welcoming and helpful as I’ve navigated the process of relocation. Both they and the town of Cookeville are delightful, and I’m very eager to show my appreciation by partnering with them in ministry.”
